The risks of a leaking pool

Many swimming pool owners don't realise how much damage a simple leak can cause. Even a small leak can quickly result in structural problems, which will bring a whole lot of trouble your way if left unchecked. Unrepaired leaks in vinyl pools can wash away vermiculite or sand underneath the liner, and a concrete pool can rise inches out of the ground in a matter of hours if the water level drops.

Even a hole as small as a pencil can decrease a pool’s water level by as much as 50mm in a day. Multiple smaller holes could actually produce even more water loss, while leaks in vinyl pools can cause the material to become porous and break down over time.

No matter what kind of pool you have, leaving even the smallest of leaks unaddressed simply isn't an option. What's more, it's worth bearing in mind that pools can often be damaged even when treated with the utmost care. For example, you can cause irreparable damage merely by cleaning and scrubbing your pool too regularly!

Before calling us, perform this test:

    • Make sure the water level is normal.
    • Fill a bucket with pool water to just below the top.
    • Place the bucket on the first step of the pool.
    • Mark the level of the water in the bucket.
    • Shut off the pump and mark the pool level on the outside of the bucket.
    • Turn the pump back on.
    • Leave the pool for 24 hours.
    • Compare the two levels.

If you find that the outside mark has decreased more than the water level in the bucket, chances are you're dealing with a leak, and should get in touch with us immediately for further testing.
